1.
Awake arise 01:40
Awake arise Pull out your eyes And hear what time of day And when you're done Pull out your tongue And see what you can say
2.
I see the moon And the moon sees me
3.
There was a man of Thessaly And he was wondrous wise He jumped into a bramble bush And scratched out both his eyes And where he saw his eyes were out With all his might and main He jumped into another bush And scratched them in again
4.
There was an old woman Lived inside a hill And if she's not gone She lives there still
5.
I am a little butterly Born in a bower Christened in a tea pot Died in half an hour

about

Short and strange nursery rhymes from Iona & Peter Opie's collection for The Oxford Nursery Rhyme Book given new melodies and arrangements by Chris Ruffoni. Recorded at home during Covid-19 lockdown, March 2020. Featuring Harriet Richardson on flute and vocals, everything else by Chris.

Rhymes, songs and stories may take on new meanings as they travel through time and relate to different contexts. 'Arise awake' deals with the empty space of a day, 'I see the moon' becomes a mantra for connecting with celestial beings when human connections are shattered, the madness of productivity is reflected in 'The man of Thessaly', 'The old woman in the hill' addresses the mundanity of isolation, and 'I am a little butterfly' speaks of spring and mortality.
